"Simulation Model for energy assessment in ISP and Web Search Engine collaboration"

Abstract:

This paper proposes a simulation model to address the problem of evaluating the benefits of collaboration between an Internet Service Provider (ISP) comprising a P2P network supporting a cache mechanism and aWeb Search Engine (WSE). Through this model, we aim to evaluate a cache-based approach to reduce the query traffic directed from the ISP network to the WSE. We present a comparative study based on discrete-event simulation. The studied performance metrics include overall cache hits, load balance and power consumption. In all cases, the results show that the cache-based approach leads to better performance than the state of the art approaches. Additionally, we evaluate how a low cost halfway cache service can reduce the query traffic up to 30%.
